Firefighters on Saturday, June 16, 2018, assisted two men who were swamped by the excavator in Starý Smokovec in the High Tatras. They were assisted by ground and air rescue workers.
The accident occurred near the House of Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) during the demolition work, where the ceiling panel with an excavator on it fell on two workers. As stated on the HZS website, both people remained stuck under the excavator.
Using the crane that was in place, the excavator was lifted and the people who had suffered serious injuries pulled out. Rescue worker Alena Krčová said that both injured men were taken to a hospital in Poprad, one of them in serious condition and in artificial sleep.
